Beam Suntory and DeKuyper came to iCrossing in need of a creative idea to boost sales in a fiercely competitive category, spirits and ingredients. They knew they had to break through the noise of the competition and offer customers a unique value proposition to get them to convert. They were confident in the quality of their product, but in a space with many high-quality brands, didn’t know how to stand out.
iCrossing had been a digital agency partner to Beam Suntory for many years. We designed and built websites, grew social communities, created rich content, and acquired new legal drinking-age customers through performance media and search. We partnered with many of the amazing brands at Beam Suntory, including Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, Skinnygirl, LaPhroaig and Pinnacle.
Through extensive customer research and audience insight analysis, we found that cocktail drinkers often search for recipes to enjoy when celebrating occasions. This sparked an idea. Instead of simply helping Beam Suntory advertise their products to customers, we designed and built an entire experience to help customers address their need for cocktail recipes. The Cocktail Project was born, a fully interactive destination (and social media campaign) where customers could find classic and creative recipes for any popular occasion. We offered these recipes for free, delivering value to the customer before they ever made a purchase.
This premium mobile-first experience features a searchable database of recipes, high-quality photos, video tutorials and articles—promoting the entire portfolio of Beam Suntory products. In its first seven months, search traffic for The Cocktail Project exceeded that of top competitor, thebar.com. It all started with the insight that what customers actually want is to make cocktails to celebrate with the people they love.
